Stara trta in Maribor: the world’s oldest fruit-bearing vine

The vine on the Lent façade is more than decoration. Stara trta, a Žametovka vine, still bears fruit and its history of over four centuries is recognised by Guinness World Records. The story of the place

Maribor developed on trading routes beside the Drava, and Lent recalls its river-port past. Its Žametovka vine, Stara trta, is recognised by Guinness World Records as the world’s oldest vine still producing fruit, at more than 400 years old. The record belongs to the vine itself, not to the oldest wine bar or winery. The house it grows against and the surrounding vineyards tell the story of Slovenian Styria. Today Maribor offers a rewarding balance of historic streets, river views and green hills.

Lent and the Drava: Maribor from the waterfront

Maribor’s oldest district unfolds beside the Drava. The Water Tower, bridges and houses reflected in the river recall its importance as a transport route.
