Private trip from Vienna: Győr & Pannonhalma Archabbey
Győr sits halfway between Vienna and Budapest where the Mosoni-Duna, Rába and Rábca rivers meet. Its Baroque centre of corner balconies, calm squares and riverside walks is pleasantly undiscovered, and just a short drive away Pannonhalma Archabbey crowns a hill as one of Hungary's oldest landmarks. Together they make an ideal day trip from Bratislava, Vienna or Brno.

What you will see
In Győr, stroll across Széchenyi Square with its Carmelite church, along lanes lined with typical enclosed corner balconies and up Chapter Hill to the basilica, home to the precious reliquary herm of St Ladislaus. The Bishop's Castle rises above the old town. At Pannonhalma, discover the basilica and Gothic cloister, the monumental Classicist library of around 400,000 volumes, the arboretum and wide views; the abbey also runs a winery and lavender fields.

The story of the place
The Benedictine abbey of Pannonhalma was founded in 996, before Stephen was crowned the first king of Hungary, and monks have lived there continuously ever since. It has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1996. Győr grew from Roman Arrabona into a bishop's seat and fortress town; most of its Baroque appearance dates from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
Make the most of your visit · Győr & Pannonhalma Archabbey
A Győr and Pannonhalma trip is a relaxed day with short drives: from Bratislava you reach Győr in about an hour, from Vienna a little longer, and from Brno it is a longer but still comfortable day trip. We suggest starting at the abbey while it is quiet, then enjoying Győr's Baroque centre and a riverside lunch in the afternoon. Abbey admission and any tasting at the abbey winery are arranged separately; your driver provides transport, not guided tours.
